Courses description
The materials for the courses have been prepared in accordance with the guidelines of the Minister of National Education of Iceland.
ICELANDIC LEVEL 1 (A1.1)
The level 1 course is designed for beginners, during which they will learn the Icelandic alphabet, pronunciation and basic vocabulary. Students practice speaking, understanding, reading and writing basic sentences using a variety of teaching methods. Basic grammar is presented in relation to the course material. Pronunciation is trained.
ICELANDIC LEVEL 2 (A1.2)
The course is a continuation of the first level. It is also suitable for people who have already mastered the basics of the Icelandic language. Vocabulary is increased to enable students to use simple sentences related to everyday life. Speaking, comprehension, reading and writing are practiced with an emphasis on everyday language using a variety of teaching methods. Grammar information is extended in relation to the material.
ICELANDIC LEVEL 3 (A2.1)
The course is a continuation of Icelandic A1 and is also suitable for those who have acquired basic skills in Icelandic at the A1 level. Vocabulary related to daily life, illnesses, family, food, and an individual’s work is taught. Emphasis is also placed on introducing Icelandic society. The course encourages students’ confidence in expressing themselves in Icelandic through continued practice in speaking, understanding, reading, and writing Icelandic using a variety of teaching methods. Grammar is taught in connection with the learning material.
ICELANDIC LEVEL 4 (A2.2)
The course is a continuation of Icelandic A2.1 and is also suitable for those who have acquired basic skills in Icelandic at the A1 level. Vocabulary related to daily life, hobbies, home, weather, appearance, and individual work is taught. Emphasis is also placed on introducing Icelandic society. Students’ confidence in expressing themselves in Icelandic is supported through continued practice in speaking, understanding, reading, and writing Icelandic using diverse teaching methods. Continuation of grammar studies.
ICELANDIC LEVEL 5 (B1.1)
The course is a continuation of level A2 and is also suitable for those who have a strong foundation in Icelandic. Vocabulary is further expanded through topics related to living in Iceland and current social discussions. A variety of language teaching methods are used. Writing skills are further developed. Grammar knowledge is increased based on the material that students have already learned.
ICELANDIC LEVEL 6 (B1.2)
The course is a continuation of the B1.1 level and is tailored to the needs of individuals with a solid foundation in the language. It focuses on aspects related to daily life and family needs. The goal is to enhance students’ comprehension skills in situations that may arise in work, school, and everyday life. Emphasis is placed on participants’ ability to express their feelings and opinions, aiming to improve language proficiency and boost self-confidence. Special attention is given to practicing spoken language, which enhances reading, writing, and grammatical skills.
Icelandic for school and preschool staff 1-2
The course aims to enhance vocabulary in the school and preschool setting. It will provide in-depth training in practical basic vocabulary related to children, their environment, clothing, eating habits, and well-being. Emphasis is placed on communication with children, parents, and colleagues at the workplace, as well as preparing participants for work and active involvement in professional life, where Icelandic at the basic and preschool levels is a key focus. Students will receive diverse training in the main aspects of the language, with grammar integrated according to proficiency levels.
Icelandic for school and kindergarten employees, level 2-3 with elements of assertiveness
The course is a continuation of the course “Icelandic for School and Preschool Staff, Levels 1-2.” The aim of the course is to improve and expand the vocabulary used in schools and preschools. The course provides an in-depth discussion of practical vocabulary related to daily tasks. Emphasis is placed on communication with children, parents, and colleagues at the workplace. The course also covers key aspects of self-empowerment, with the goal of helping participants strengthen their self-esteem. Participants are supported in general communication skills, both in the workplace and in relationships with partners, family members, etc. Grammar is integrated in accordance with the students’ proficiency and knowledge level.
Icelandic for school and kindergarten employees, level 3-4
The course is a continuation of the course “Icelandic for School and Preschool Staff, Levels 2-3.” The aim of the course is to improve and expand the vocabulary used in schools and preschools. The course provides a detailed discussion of practical vocabulary related to daily tasks. Greater emphasis is placed on communication with children, parents, and colleagues at the workplace. The course also delves deeper into grammar, which is integrated according to the students’ proficiency and knowledge level.
Spoken Icelandic „Spjöllum saman”
The course emphasizes training participants in conversations and storytelling in different situations. The course materials and methods are designed to meet the participants’ needs. Prerequisites for this 20-hour course are that students have completed Icelandic at levels 1, 2 (A1) or have acquired comparable knowledge. The focus is on training skills in storytelling and conversation in various situations, with an emphasis on pronunciation, sentence structure, and basic grammar. Students practice discussions on interesting topics through a variety of approaches from the instructor.
Preparation course for the Icelandic citizenship test
The main goal of the course is to prepare participants for the Icelandic exam, which is part of the process of applying for Icelandic citizenship. The course primarily focuses on vocabulary and expressions related to the daily life of students, including school, work, etc. The student gains knowledge of vocabulary that helps them participate in simple conversations in daily life. Additionally, correct spelling, listening comprehension, and grammar are practiced. In order to participate in this course, the student must have completed levels 1 and 2 (A1) of Icelandic or have acquired comparable skills.
